Follow on Google News | CardiacFITT Celebrates April Minority Health MonthCommunity Block Party 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 30 at Juanita Craft Recreation Center
By: CardiacFITT The event will be held at the historic Juanita Craft Recreation Center, 4500 Spring Ave., Dallas, Texas 75210. Crystal Dobson, CardiacFITT CEO, said the day will be filled with health-inspired and fun activities for all ages. They include health screenings for blood pressure, group exercise classes (total body, cardio TRAP dance, yoga/meditation, stretching), games for all, food, and giveaways. Participants include medical professionals, health and wellness advocates, fitness trainers, community leaders, and local celebrities. "A lot of people with chronic conditions have had some hesitancy on getting out of the house during the last two years of the Covid-19 Pandemic. We know that can lead to isolation and decreasing physical and mental wellness," Dobson said. "This event will follow Covid-19 safety protocols. We want to encourage people to get outside, socialize with others and get a little vitamin D from the sunshine." Dobson, a registered nurse and health advocate, said the recreation center location was chosen because its surrounding community is struggling with the impact of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and other co-morbidities. The center, named after the civil rights advocate and located 3 miles from Dallas' central business district, is next door to the Frazier neighborhood, where residents are affected by generational and systematic issues, according to community supporters. The American Hospital Association and state health statistics show that Frazier neighborhood residents where nearly three times more likely to die of diabetes than anywhere else in the Dallas metropolitan area. In recognition of Minority Health Month, the CardiacFITT team wanted to share their wellness tools with a wider audience. "CardiacFITT serves as a bridge between patients and doctors. Frequently, a doctor will tell a patient to lose weight or to exercise more," said Dr. Joniqua Howard, CardiacFITT team leader. "However, the patient goes home and is confused. We fill that gap by offering monitored exercise, group-setting behavioral counseling and dietician recommended meal plans. Through our program, clients have learned about eating triggers, how to get the best benefits of exercise and ways to increase their longevity." Attendance is free but participants are highly encouraged to register at https://bit.ly/ End
