Follow on Google News | Best lookout points for whale watching in South AustraliaWhale watching season is just around the corner, so it's time to plan ahead how to get the best views of the migrating Southern Right whales.
By: Surf and Sun Whales are generally spotted all along the state's coast, but there are greater chances of spotting them in the areas we will show below. Southern Right whales are the most common species, but experts say Humpback whales can be spotted too. Somewhat more rarely, you may just spot Sperm Whales, Pilot Whales, and even blue whales. 1) The Bluff, Encounter Bay and Bashams Beach, Middleton The vicinity of Port Elliot, Encounter Bay, and Middleton has many, well-recommended spots, and these two are just some of it. Encounter Bay's Rosetta Head rises up to 100 metres, which results in many panoramic views. The walk from the car park to the top of the Bluff is about an 850m return loop. See below for a link on best adventure tour planners who could help you organise adventure activities in the area. As for Bashams Beach, one good thing is the short distance from the parking area to the viewing platform. 2) Kangaroo Island This is another favourite for the whales, in particular the Blue whales (who unfortunately might choose to stay in the deeper waters). 3) Head of Bight Fowlers Bay isn't the most remote place from Adelaide to go whale watching. That award arguably goes to a spot some 11 hours away by car from Adelaide, and that is the Head of Bight. Specifically, the best site is Head of the Bight Visitor Centre, which is near the Bunda Cliffs off the highway. Incidentally, the whole area is part of the Yalata Aboriginal Community. 4) Port Lincoln Some sources say Port Lincoln has a relatively new whale watching spot. It's possible that this would be a spot at the end of Sleaford Bay Road. Whale sightings in the area are being reported as growing over time. Before we end, be ready to spend some time outdoors so as to catch the whales in their natural element. Don't pass up a sightseeing adventure for the books; include whale watching in your next adventure camp, surf camp, or winter adventure. Speaking of outdoor adventure camps: let Willow Creek Adventure Camp (https://www.willowcreekadventurecamp.com.au), a provider of dormitory style accommodation and camping and outdoor education activities, assist you in organising your next adventure activities in South Australia.
