Oglethorpe, commissioned by the Georgia Board of Trustees in England, set out to form a "buffer" colony between English South Carolina and Spanish Florida, through the founding of Savannah. A unique man, Oglethorpe treated the Native Americans as equals and sought to create a refuge for the downtrodden.  He forbad slavery, hard liquor and lawyers, while granting religious freedom to all.
