Wade and Buck's struggle down the mountain poses many dangerous encounters, including a javelina face-off, a fall from an old rope bridge into a canyon, and the added burden of a chance meet-up with a young man who claims to be an enviro-activist but has a knack for crashing his bike and landing in thorny patches.

When Buck goes missing again, surprises, setbacks, and irritations fade and Wade begins a frantic search that turns into an emotional rampage. He must use every skill he has learned as a human being and a park ranger to save the dog and find his home.
