Art Comes Out of the Woods in Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. - Aug. 14, 2022 - PRLog -- Artists Marcy Lansman, Ellie Reinhold and Jason Smith present their work in a show, Out of the Woods opening August 23rd at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts.

During COVID, walking in the woods was a life-saver for painter Marcy Lansman, a way to spend time with friends without masks, without worry. So it's not surprising that many of the paintings she created during this period were inspired by what she saw on these walks in the woods. Her technique is to put down an underpainting consisting of patches of bright colors. Then, using mainly a palette knife, she fills the canvas with random bits of color to form an underpainting creating speckles of colors which enliven the painting, mimicking splashes of light we see in nature. This technique is especially suited to paintings of trees since, from a distance, the leaves on a tree look like random splotches that vary not only in brightness, but in color. "My hope is that the paintings will, at least momentarily, take the viewer out of his or her busy world into the peace and quiet of the woods."

"While the title Out of the Woods is a hopeful gesture about being out of the pandemic," says painter Ellie Reinhold, "I must admit that I don't feel out of the woods yet. Being in the world continues to feel somewhat fraught. However, color and pattern are returning to my palette/canvas - perhaps that's some sign of pending 'normalcy'. Among the paintings in this show are several in which the forest is filled with 'panels' of colors, brush strokes of varying hues and tones relating to the season or the mood, as well as a series of playful and colorful simplified graphic interpretations of the shelter in the woods."

A native of Clearwater FL, metal sculptor Jason Smith now resides in Hillsborough, NC.  Jason is an award-winning sculptor whose work is collected both in the US and abroad. His pursuit of artistic expression spans nearly 30 years. Jason feels very blessed to be able to make his living as an artist. Metal is his medium due to its strength, malleability and inherent beauty. Jason's sculpture is abstract, the abstract manipulation of form in space creates visual balance, in which rhythm, action and movement, combine to create compositions that convey the implied energy found in his work.

"Out of the Woods" will run from August 23 - September 24 at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts, with an opening reception on August 26 from 6-9pm.
