2. Plan your departure time. Heavy traffic is typical from 3 to 8 p.m. on the Friday before Labor Day.

3. Be aware of work zones that could delay traffic during peak travel times.

4. Get enough rest before taking the wheel. Don't drive while impaired, which includes drowsy driving.

5. Check your vehicle before a long drive. Checking the tire pressure, oil level, and engine fluid levels can help prevent breakdowns.

6. Protect your loved ones and yourself by simply wearing your seat belt.

7. Drive during daylight hours for optimal visibility.

8. Avoid distractions, such as cell phones and maps while you drive.

9. Designate an alcohol and drug-free driver.

10. Finally, obey speed limits.
