What Type of Teeth Whitening Treatment Do You Use?

There is a myriad of options when it comes to teeth whitening; from cosmetic products to professional teeth whitening. All the products and treatments have one goal—they whiten the teeth. However, not all are effective or safe for your teeth.

These cosmetic teeth whitening products are readily available and affordable. They come in the form of toothpaste, mouth rinses, gels, and foams. You can access these products at your local drug store. These teeth bleaching products contain about three percent of the bleaching agent (but others have higher content). This amount of whitening agent can be ineffective at times based on the level of severity. Furthermore, the bleaching agent can affect your gums and cause bleeding. That is why it is important to speak to a teeth whitening dentist before you use any of these products.

Professional teeth whitening treatment

This is the most recommended teeth whitening option. It is done at the dentist's office and it yields better results compared to cosmetic teeth whitening products. Yes, the whitening product used contains a higher percentage of the bleaching agent. But, the dentist will take the necessary precaution to protect the gums and shield them from bruising.

Traditional teeth whitening begins with the application of the protective product on the gums. Next, the dentist applies the bleaching agent on the teeth and leaves it for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. You can, however, opt for Zoom or laser teeth whitening. Zoom whitening follows the same procedure, but the dentist will use a Zoom activator light to breakdown the agent and hasten the process.

The whitening procedure is repeated two to three times depending on the severity of the discolouration. The dentist might give you take-home whitening kits to maintain the whitening results at home. These kits are customized to your teeth and dental needs.

D.I.Y whitening products

The Do-It-Yourself whitening products have also been on the rise. Some people suggest that these whitening products are effective, but research is out on that.

Baking soda is one of the commonly used products in bleaching the teeth. It is mildly abrasive and can remove mild stains from the teeth. However, using baking soda can change the pH of the teeth and cause them to wear out. The more you use the baking soda the weaker the enamel will become.

It is important to consult the dentist before you use any of the above mentioned products as they may make the situation worse.
