SARASOTA, Fla. - Sept. 14, 2022 - PRLog -- Howard Gardner's concept of multiple intelligences states that people have different "intelligences," or particular strengths in certain areas when learning. Gardner's theory has recently become popular with Suncoast School for Innovative Studies, a school that assesses students' strengths and provides an approach leading to an improved academic performance. To learn more about Gardner's theory, let us unfold his eight intelligences and discover how his theory benefits students.

The 8 Intelligences
  1. Visual: Visual learners are skilled at learning through pictures, graphs, or videos. They enjoy the visual arts, reading and writing, and easily recognize patterns, like an artist or an architect does.
  2. Musical: Musical learners will learn through rhythm and sounds. They greatly admire and appreciate music, and may even enjoy performing on a stage. They are in tune to the patterns and melodies in music while understanding a piece of music's structure.
  3. Kinesthetic: Kinesthetic learners will likely thrive in sports. They love learning through physical activity and learn best by doing. Think of a ballerina or a sculptor, a swimmer or an actor.
  4. Intrapersonal: Important philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle were intrapersonal learners. Intrapersonal learners are very self-aware, frequently analyze concepts, and evaluate the relationships with people in their lives.
  5. Interpersonal: Interpersonal learners are great "people persons." They love to interact with others and are skilled at understanding people's emotions and intentions. Like a psychologist or a politician, they are great at communicating and assessing problems in a group instead of individually.
  6. Linguistic: Linguistic learners thrive in reading, writing, debating, and memorizing information. They are apt at delivering speeches and providing clear explanations, like a teacher or an attorney.
  7. Logical: A logical learner will excel in the field of mathematics because they can logically analyze problems and identify patterns. They enjoy scientific experiments, solving complex problems, and finding patterns in equations.
  8. Naturalistic: Naturalistic learners are more in tune with the natural world and exploring it. They enjoy being outdoors, exploring subjects like biology or botany, and are passionate about environmental matters.

The Advantages Gardner's Theory Has on Students

Perhaps the most significant reason why educators value Gardner's theory is because of the effect it has on students with disabilities. By acknowledging how each student learns best, teachers discover how to work with a student's strengths and support struggling learners. Teachers also reinforce past concepts to their students to improve learning of those key concepts. They measure how a concept is mastered by providing different teaching methods. Students also discover how best they learn, and explore their education through their abilities. Applying Gardner's theory has helped students improve academically, as it steers away from traditional modes of learning, and supports them through their strengths. This has also become an advantage to teachers, who now encourage their students to the fullest and watch them thrive.
