College admissions consulting can remain even further out of reach with an average cost of $5,000. Murray explains, "I started UPchieve because I actually was a low-income high school student, and I found navigating the college application process on my own really challenging. I believe it should be easy for students to access academic support services like tutoring and college counseling whenever they need them. It shouldn't matter who your parents are or how much money they make." UPchieve seeks to level the playing field by ensuring that all students have access to high-quality academic support from certified tutors and college counselors. Founded in 2016, the organization seeks to democratize access to academic support so that all students have an equal opportunity to finish high school, attend college, and achieve upward mobility. UPchieve's goal is to reach all low-income high school students in the US by 2030. Their work has been recognized by Forbes and TIME, and their funders include Y Combinator and the Gates Foundation.
