"The Venn Diagram of Dance" by Dana Humphrey

QUEENS, N.Y. - Oct. 7, 2022 - PRLog -- The art piece celebrates the local dance community and highlights some of the producers and groups.  Humphrey jokes that she considers her "gateway dance" to be 5 Rhythms. "That was the first dance workshop that got me into my body in a more conscious way," says the artist.

Kiana Love came by the Venn Diagram of Dance at the Decompression event and moved around the magnetic symbols representing 16 dance event producers: Lightning Society, House of Yes, Dance Lab, Daybreaker, Kostume Kult, Disorient, Disco Tree, Body Language (previously The Get Down), Luca's Lounge, Thunder Gumbo, Junxion, Reboot NYC, Ecstatic Dance, I Feel and Deep Playa. Participants could also add their own.

"It was lot of fun! That was sweet to connect and reflect on the spaces I dance," said Kiana Love.

Venn Diagrams are the overlap of two or more subjects. The idea came to artist Dana Humphrey when she was in line at coat check, for an "I Feel" party. She  started chatting in line with the guy behind her who was just arriving and checking his coat, and identified as a DJ.

Humphrey casually said "Where else do you dance?"
He said "I don't know, where else is there? I guess mainly this party."

Humphrey rattled off places that she had danced earlier that day and where she was headed next, and she still got a blank stare back from the DJ.  She realized that within the NYC dance community there could be more to learn….

This art pieces invites the participant to ask some of the following questions: Are you part of the conscious dance movement or do you prefer something more cool?   Are you wild, rebellious & underground? Do you dance in parks with the bare grass on your feet? Or on the sand?  Is dance your medicine? Or a place you dress-up to socialize at? Or both?

At the Decompression party at the Knockdown Center, "burners" (those who go to burning man) were invited to take a look at the "Venn Diagram of Dance" and place a pin on the map of dance where they fall in, and to participate and play with the Venn Diagram and add pins to mark the circles.  Over 200 pins were used.

The New York League of Arts, advised by volunteer members of BurningMan.NYC community, convened a jury and decided to award Venn Diagram of Dance (Project) this opportunity.
