MIAMI - Nov. 8, 2022 - PRLog -- 'Cornucopia' Explores the Colonial Experience of Guyana

With sharply detailed honesty and wit, Terence Roberts utilizes his own diverse family history to explore the roots and identity of his and other people of mixed race, which is a product of the European colonization of Guyana.

Cornucopia is an exciting and gripping novel of imaginative fiction that's based on personal and historical information. The cultural backdrop of Guyana provides a richly woven cosmopolitan history, from its Dutch and French colonial beginnings to its British colonization, and its ultimate 1966 independence.

This literary adventure spanning 300 years will captivate readers with its vivid poetic language and flowing cinematic narrative style. Rather than simply "telling," it "shows." The numerous small stories twist and turn in unforgettable ways, owing to the narrator's upbringing and adult education in the capital of Georgetown.

"Standing on the seawall was the same as standing on an ancient dam two centuries ago. That I came to know. A dam built bit by bit first by pioneers from the Netherlands, then the help of labor from African slaves under encroaching Anglo rule in the colony at the end of the 18th century. After the boy evolved into that older I of this writing, it became more real for him to imagine the black skin of slaves shining with sweat in the burning equatorial coastal sun. But I could never be sure of the content of their thoughts."

About the Author: Born in British Guiana, Terence Roberts comes from a Guyanese family of ancient adventurers comprised of five different cultures and nationalities. He first emerged at the end of the 1960s as a teenage poet and prose writer, winning the Guyana Arts Council 1st Prize for fiction in 1968. Brought by his parents to live in Toronto in 1969, he remained in touch with Guyana, becoming the commuting lead columnist on cinema for the weekend national newspaper, the Guyana Chronicle. In the 1970s, he emerged as a contemporary painter, winning Canada Council Grants and receiving diplomatic sponsorship for his foreign exhibitions. The author, poet, and painter has lived in Montreal, New York, Caracas, Mexico City, Madrid, Rome, Turin, Milan, Monaco, and Nice.
