Full support for President's decision, announces Dr. Mahtani

Recently, Dr. Rajan Mahtani extended his full support towards the decision made by the Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema. On the special occasion of Africa Day, Zambian President announced his plans to abolish the death penalty row. Adding his voice in support of this announcement, Dr. Mahtani stated that the concept of death penalty is archaic. It is an inhumane, degrading and cruel law that holds no significance in the modern-day legal system. At the same time, Dr. Rajan Mahtani highlighted that this archaic law is already on the verge of abolishment as majority of the nations across the globe as well as across Africa have abolished this law. This can be also attributed to the fact that past Presidents have been tactically avoiding death penalty by giving mercy prerogatives. The last death penalty was given in the year 1997. Also, visits of important political figures such as Vice President and Acting President Guy Scott revealed the pathetic conditions of some of these Maximum prisons. According to these visits, the condition of the prisoners is severely degrading with many devoid of even basic human dignity. This has prompted the Zambian government to collaborate with Zambian Correctional facilities and Parole Board Zambia for strategic decongestion of prisoners by releasing the prisoners. In such scenario, giving death penalty to prisoners makes no sense and the decision from the Zambian President is a step in the right direction.
