Finding Dad 58 Years Later Based On DNA

HAMPTON, Va. - Dec. 17, 2022 - PRLog -- An Arkansas man found his biological father with the help of a DNA test and Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com more than 5 decades after his birth.

Maurice Crawford found and introduced himself to his birth father's family after 58 years. Crawford's mother told Maurice that his father was a different person.

"I'm truly excited to bring about closure, although I didn't get a chance to meet my Dad," Crawford said. "Although it's been almost 60 years, he really is pleased to connect with his father's side of the family. For years, even his mother had Crawford's story beginning in 1963. His mother told him that she met his father in Hampton, Virginia. She told Crawford when she became pregnant that, she went to the base to tell him that she was pregnant. The father was supposed to be in the Air Force. But instead, she was told that the father had been shipped to Vietnam. That was the story she told Crawford as a child repeatedly to him until his mother's passing in 2005.

After searching for his dad under the assumed name, Michael "Mickey" Moore, he ran into a dead-end searching military records. In 2011, Crawford turned to Ancestry.com and ordered a DNA test to see if he could find relatives on his father's side. Unfortunately, it was not until 2019 he did get a person on his father's side that was a close match. Needing further assistance, he turned to a genealogist for advice. A woman in California, Michelle Trostler, responded to his call.

Within a week, she narrowed it down and told him, "I'm sure that your father is in the Debrick family," Crawford said. Michael Moore turned out to be a Debrick. Facebook finally connected Crawford with a sister who had DNA on 23andMe.com.  He said, "I feel like embracing the family is just like embracing him, although my dad is not present. I finally know who I am. I know my roots now," Crawford said.
