Arizona Technology Council's Q3 Impact Report Shows Arizona Ranks 12th in the Nation in Technology Industry Diversity

Report Also Shows Technology Job Postings are Leveling Out After Early 2022 Surge and Arizona Lags Behind Nation in Graduates with Science and Engineering Degrees
PHOENIX - Dec. 19, 2022 - PRLog -- The Arizona Technology Council released its Q3 2022 Arizona Technology Industry Impact Report today, outlining the areas in which the technology industry is growing, as well as areas where there is opportunity for improvement. Most recent data highlights Arizona's ranking as 12th in the U.S. in technology industry diversity.

"The Council has made diversity, equity and inclusion a top priority by allocating significant resources for DEI events, groups and speakers, as well as partnering with industry leaders and nonprofits to improve awareness and create meaningful and lasting action," said Steven G. Zylstra, president and CEO of the Council and SciTech Institute. "Being ranked 12th in the nation for technology industry diversity is a good start, but the Council and our partners across industry, education and government sectors will continue to push until there is true equity for all."

In addition to the data on Arizona's diversity ranking, the report also found technology job postings dropped 18% during the third quarter to reflect the cooling job market. However, they still were higher than the same period last year. The data also shows that despite education and business community efforts, the state lags nearly 25% below the national average in the number of graduates earning a degree in science and engineering.

Additional industry updates include:
  • Professional, scientific and technical services lead the way in technology jobs in industry with 41,064 jobs. Information technology and finance and insurance are second and third with 19,848 and 17,157 technology jobs, respectively.
  • There are 14,493 in-state technology companies and that number has grown 8.17% year over year.
  • Arizona State University led the way in science and engineering degrees completed in 2021 at 6,120, followed by The University of Arizona at 3,058 and University of Phoenix-Arizona at 2,734.
  • Venture capital invested rose 144% from 2020 to 2021. There were $1,894 billion in investments in 2021.
