Odisha varsity students to wear uniforms made of Habaspuri fabric

The authorities of Kalahandi University have decided to provide the students with uniforms made of Habaspuri clothes to encourage the young generation to use the local handloom fabrics. Habaspuri is a handloom fabric from Chicheguda of Kalahandi and is struggling to keep up the business due to inadequate patronage and market support. According to Sanjaya Sathpathy, "this is a small attempt which may boost the traditional Habaspuri handloom weavers." The government-run university has tied with the fashion designer Sujit Meher to design the uniforms made from Habaspuri handloom fabrics. A geographical indication tag was received by Habaspuri handloom in 2012-2013. Further, due to inadequate patronage, several weavers are leaving the district to gain other jobs that could provide them with well-paid income.

Over the years, India has witnessed the decline and absolute depletion in maintaining local crafts and art due to insufficient profits and funds. But recently, the government has considered this and has emphasized promoting local products and enterprises to sustain and help the country's economy. Moreover, it will also be a procedure to preserve the culture and tradition of many professions of our diverse nation.
