ST. PAUL, Minn. - Feb. 13, 2023 - PRLog -- Annie Turnbo Malone inspired generations of women to become entrepreneurs. Millions of Black women use hair care products originally inspired by the creative genius of Annie Turnbo Malone, but are unaware of her powerful story. Author Dr. Artika Tyner chronicles the journey of the millionaire in her new book, "The Untold Story of Annie Turnbo Malone: Hair Care Millionaire (First But Forgotten)."

The Capstone Captivate book is available on Bookshop. The 32-page children's book is written for ages 9 to 11. It provides a fascinating and historical look at Malone's childhood, tribulations, and million-dollar hair care and cosmetic line that was founded several years before that of Madam C.J. Walker.

Walker is typically cited for the success of her hair care products for Black women in the early 1900s. Prior to launching her hair care line, Walker worked for Malone and was one of many whom Malone mentored.

Malone was born to former slaves in Metropolis, IL in 1869, the tenth of 11 children. Possessing a curious mind and powerful intellect she was keenly interested in chemistry as a child and a gifted hair stylist at the age of 14. She was determined to find a safer, healthier, and non-damaging method of hair straightening for Black women in the 1800s.

Malone experimented extensively, finally arriving at her Wonderful Hair Grower that used natural botanicals. Malone launched her own business with the formula, christened the company Poro – a West African word - and it made her a millionaire.

Malone died on May 10, 1957, but her legacy as an inventor, chemist, businesswoman, and philanthropist lives on (https://bookshop.org/a/2144/9781669004912). She established the Poro College of cosmetology and personal style. The company and college provided jobs for nearly 75,000 women. A pioneer in the industry, her products revolutionized hair care for Black women around the globe.
