The Town Of Sun Village California Makes History As The First Black Tribal Township In North AmericaBy: Sun Village Administrative & Development Team Sun Village, California, is the first tribal township in North America. The City Council declared its town a tribal territory, the first of its kind since the advent of slavery, establishing itself as a separate indigenous territory and government for African Americans. The town of Sun Village was founded in 1938 by a Cherokee Chief, who established the town for all indigenous black people in America. This comes on the heels of Governor Gavin Newsom's quest to right the wrongs of racial injustice through reparations. Governor Newsom, in his address to the nation on reparations stated, "California is leading the nation in a bipartisan way on the issue of reparations and racial justice, which is a discussion that is long overdue and deserves our utmost attention."
