Burleigh's Southland Sketches adapted for Alto Flute or Flute

For an excellent biography of Harry Thacker Burleigh (1866-1949), please see the Library of Congress article at https://guides.loc.gov/harry-thacker-burleigh.  In brief, Burleigh was a superb African-American composer, professional baritone, and music editor; he is perhaps best known for his arrangements of African-American spirituals, newly introducing this music genre to a broad range of musicians and audiences, and even influencing works created by his friend Antonín Dvořák.

The Southland Sketches were composed by Burleigh for violin and piano, and published by G. Ricordi in 1916; but these pieces also work very nicely when played on either alto flute or flute.  The original composition included four sketches.  The new Noteworthy Sheet Music edition provides adaptations of the violin part for either alto flute or flute for three of the original four miniatures.  The publication provides only the transcribed alto flute and flute parts, as they have been adapted to work well with the piano part in the original score for violin and piano which is available as a good quality, free pdf download.  Performers may choose to play all three of these pieces on either flute or alto flute, or switch instruments between sketches, depending on personal preference.  These quintessentially American short pieces are very appealing and fun to play.
