WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Jan. 31, 2023 - PRLog -- Florida Alimony Reform remains in limbo but lifetime alimony is still very real for those already paying and soon-to-be divorcees coming out of long-term marriages.

Matthew Brickman has been discussing this topic with actor, spokesperson, and musician Rio Rocket on his divorce and paternity podcast MediateThis!

Rio Rocket is a multi-hyphenate musician, film, television, and voice actor who has a recurring role on the ABC TV series FOR LIFE, and the Accenture-produced streaming series HACKERLAND. He is also the first and only motivational spokesperson for Lowe's Companies.

The conversation can be heard in the following segment:

As the two discussed what constitutes a long-term marriage where lifetime alimony is a possibility, it has been established that seventeen years or more is the threshold.

One finer point in settling divorce cases is need versus ability and one of the most important terms to understand is equitable distribution. The State of Florida uses equitable distribution to split assets in a divorce but Matthew Brickman explained how this term is often misunderstood.

He stated. "Some people think it's equal, and some people think it's fair. Well it's neither right? It doesn't have to be equal or fair, it's equitable. And that can be a combination."

He went on to explain that generally speaking it's a 50/50 split but there are a variety of factors that can offset this such as the outside activities of either spouse, the children's needs and the parent's ability to play. Matthew and Rio ran through several scenarios using various numbers to calculate what would happen in each scenario. Matthew emphasized how important it is to understand how this process works so you don't get blindsided when you walk into court or mediation.
