More sustainable companies should consider apprenticeships

AUSTIN, Texas - Feb. 10, 2023 - PRLog -- Industries that are struggling with labour shortages and are hard-pressed to fill vacancies should consider launching apprenticeships, as this could be beneficial for both employers and those interested in joining the green sector workforce, said Joseph Boll, EcoCareers CEO. His comments come as parts of the United Kingdom acknowledge National Apprenticeship Week from February 6 to 12.

EcoCareers.org is an online jobs board and resource website for all jobs in sustainability, whether traditional green jobs like solar panel technicians or environmental scientists to jobs in industries that are newer to sustainability, like fashion and manufacturing. EcoCareers.org seeks to connect employers, hiring managers and HR personnel in the green sector with jobseekers and the top talent in their respective industries.

The green sector has been experiencing tremendous growth in recent times. Some experts estimate that green jobs have jumped up by around 250 per cent in the last five years alone. The trouble is that the industry is now struggling to find enough skilled workers to take up that surplus of green jobs. Resource sites like Eco Careers have stepped up in an effort to bridge the gap between employers and job seekers, and to help address the labour shortage. But apprenticeships in the green economy could be another viable solution to the challenge at hand.

"With a skills shortage like this, apprenticeships could be a great way to solve two challenges at one time," said Boll. "Businesses that desperately need workers can hire apprentices who meet criteria and who are interested in developing careers in sustainability. Meanwhile, jobseekers looking to make an entry into the industry can make a living while starting to learn the critical technical skills that they'll need to succeed in their job paths."

Indeed, employment opportunities like apprenticeships could be a practically perfect way to provide a stable job to interested workers while providing the hands-on training that will ensure hard-to-fill roles have adequate labour supply. Especially if apprentices are provided with good wages and reasonable benefits, Boll added, it could easily be a win-win for both parties involved.

"From an HR perspective, by hiring an apprentice under favourable conditions, the company has the opportunity to develop the ideal employee for certain roles and also help build loyalty right from the start. It's something EcoCareers will be keeping an eye on in the future, and of course we would be delighted to help businesses with talent acquisition in this regard should they decide to pursue this route."
