The Libertarian Party of Bexar County to Protest Eminent Domain Abuse in San Antonio

The Libertarian Party of Bexar County is organizing a rally against the immoral use of eminent domain by the City of San Antonio, the Alamo Trust, and the Texas General Land Office to steal the Moses Rose's Hideout bar from its rightful owner.

SAN ANTONIO - March 7, 2023 - PRLog -- The protest is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 11th at 5pm at Travis Park, with a lineup of speakers on the subjects of property, liberty, and honor. The protest will then proceed to Moses Rose's Hideout Bar at 7pm.

Proponents of the use of eminent domain claim that Mr. Cantu is simply extorting the city for personal gain. Unsurprisingly this is a mischaracterization designed to favor themselves, and deprive the public of pertinent details highlighting the injustice and one-sidedness of these proceedings, which began as anything but good faith. Mr. Cantu's business is the product of his life savings and future retirement. The offers–at roughly 20% of the size of other buyouts–would have left him and his family with little to show for 20 years of dedication to this property and their business.

Moses Rose's Hideout is centered in the heart of a growing downtown which has seen visitors to the Alamo rise to 2.5 million a year, and 13 million to the River Walk. The renewed popularity of downtown San Antonio, to which the bar has directly contributed, stands in stark contrast to the conveniently gloomy projections that the San-Antonio-hired appraisal firm have given Mr. Cantu's future property value, thereby robbing Mr. Cantu of earnings he has the right to relish. Any reasonable Texan can see the value of a prime property such as Mr. Cantu's, and would never walk away from it except at the barrel of a gun.

Governments increasingly use "economic or cultural improvement" rationale for eminent domain because they are in a position to define these vague and broad terms however it suits them. This is why Texas Government Code prohibits eminent domain to benefit private parties, and prohibits eminent domain for economic development purposes.

The Libertarian Party argues that eminent domain–if it is to be allowed at all–must be reserved for critical public needs, and must withstand stringent public scrutiny. The rights of citizens are far more important than the dreams and aspirations of politicians. The party believes that eminent domain can NEVER be used by a government on behalf of a private business or organization, regardless of how culturally important its mission is.

Join us in this important fight and let your voice be heard (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lpbexars-come-and-take-it-em...). It is time for the City of San Antonio to #RememberTheAlamo and to respect the private property rights that so many have fought and died for.
