Follow on Google News | Wisdom House To Present Environmentally-Focused Mixed Medium Exhibit & Artists' ReceptionBy: Wisdom House Retreat & Conference Center Artist McDowell's works will include large-format prints of toned cyanotypes with mixed mediums on Japanese Kozo paper and cyanotype with oil paint on linen. Invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, astronomer and scientist, cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces prints in a distinctive dark greenish blue. McDowell stated, "As a visual artist, I conceive myself as a catalyst for ever-changing realities prompted by compelling contemporary issues fused with cultural memories and realized through explorative processes. My work is my interpretation of current themes through a new visual vocabulary originating from a dialogue between painting and photography." Mr. McDowell's collections have been in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Prints and Drawings Collection; The University of Iowa Art Museum; The New Mexico Museum of Art; Tucson Museum of Art; and Florence Griswold Museum. Joseph Smolinski is a multidisciplinary artist and educator. His practice questions the shifting roles of technology within communication networks, energy, and oil companies, and the industrial agricultural infrastructure, which indelibly shape the so-called natural environment. "My work," explained Smolinski," examines technology in our changing landscape. This has led me to investigate communication networks, energy, and oil companies, and the industrial agriculture infrastructure, and how these industries shape our natural environment and physically shape our planet." Artist Smolinski's creations have been in group exhibitions at MASS MoCA; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art; and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Wisdom House is an interfaith retreat and conference center presenting programs in spirituality, wellness, the arts, and ecology, and offering hospitality to academic, civic, nonprofit, and business organizations. "We are committed to sustainability, justice, and welcoming people of all backgrounds and beliefs," stated executive director Deborah Kelly. "We are excited to feature environmentally focused programs and exhibitions that are open to the public throughout 2023."
