Other symptoms may include difficulty sleeping, difficulty concentrating, experiencing feelings of fear, anger, sadness, worry, helplessness or frustration. You may also lose your appetite or experience low-energy levels. "It's important to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly and get plenty of quality sleep," WIC Program Nutritionist Rewina Tsegay said. "Avoid alcohol and substance abuse drugs. Be proactive and talk to your doctor about your stress." One of the most effective ways to deal with stress is to practice meditation. Another way is to exercise regularly, whether by jogging, bicycling or taking long walks. Getting out in fresh air is a wonderful way to reduce stress levels. "Recognize when you don't have control and practice clearing your mind to let it go," WIC Flamingo West Clinical Coordinator Lawanda Torres said. "Avoid getting anxious about situations that you cannot change. Focus your mind on something that makes you feel calm and in control." It's important to share your feelings of stress with a family member, friend, doctor, pastor or counselor. Don't keep these feelings to yourself. Extended bouts of stress can seriously affect your physical health and mental state. Be proactive in changing your lifestyle, expressing your feelings to others and seeking medical advice and treatments if necessary.
