DC Barbers and Beauticians Cut-out Gun Violence in the DistrictDC Government and local nonprofit are putting their trust in local Barbers and Cosmetologist to cut out Gun Violence in the District. By building a new and trendy Volunteer Beauty and Barber Shop inside a Drop-In Center for Homeless Youth.
So, DC Government agencies and Local Nonprofits, led by Michael Wallace, a HU Grad and self-taught barber since age 12, is calling on Licensed Barbers and Stylists across the DMV area to Stand Up for Homeless Youth. They are looking for Volunteers to give 1 day a month to training up and styling the next generation of Barbers and Beauticians. "It's just a great way to take all those years of training from counseling longtime customers at the chair and apply it to a place of sincere need...Our youth really need the role-models," A new and upcoming nonprofit ministry called Mint Project is coordinating the large-scale effort with the help of ~20 at-risk and homeless youth interns. Their Beautification Project and Internship hires homeless and at-risk youth and trains them to beautify spaces and places while learning various professional skills and being transformed along the Way. This Project is sponsored in part by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education, The DC Department of Human Services, and the DC Department of Employment Services to bring this amazing program to life. "DC has so many resources, but our barber and beauty industry just doesn't always get the attention it deserves. With just 1 day out of the Month volunteering your time with homeless youth, our volunteer Barbers and Stylist can literally save a life," says Michael. "We have all been given our God given Talent, Gifts and Passions that fuel our ministries...if it's hair... we got plenty of heads that need a genuine touch." Not only is Mint Project training youth in this historical skillset, but they are also building a brand new Beauty and Barber shop for the center. This isn't their first Beautification Project; but this one they hope will serve hundreds of homeless youth with free cuts and dues and much needed mentorship through the next year and beyond!
