WASHINGTON - May 4, 2023 - PRLog -- The Association of Americans Residents Overseas (AARO) announced today that a leadership delegation will visit Washington DC from Monday, May 7, through Friday, May 12, as part of AARO's annual Overseas Americans Week activities conducted together with the Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas (FAWCO).

During Overseas Americans Week, the AARO delegation will meet with members of Congress and government agencies, including the State Department, the IRS and the Federal Election Commission. Meetings will also be held with scholars, think tanks, national organizations, and other key opinion leaders in Washington DC. https://aaro.org/advocacy/aaro-advocacy

Agenda items include the elimination of citizenship-based taxation, securing access to financial services in the US and overseas, retirement account issues, financial reporting burdens and penalties (e.g., FBAR), absentee voting issues, and the elimination of WEP and other Social Security issues. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Overseas Americans Week has not been held since 2019, so this will be the first time in 3 years that AARO will be able to personally communicate these important messages.

The delegation will take this opportunity to build on the newly launched "Dear 535 Campaign (https://aaro.org/advocacy/dear-535-campaign)," in which AARO and SEAT (Stop Extraterritorial American Taxation) have written personalized letters to each member of Congress containing anecdotes and comments from overseas Americans who are constituents in their respective states.

Said AARO President Doris Speer, "We are excited to finally be able to discuss these issues in person with our elected representatives in Washington DC.  It is imperative that we help Congress understand how difficult it is for overseas Americans to comply with laws enacted without them in mind."

This is an important year for AARO, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. As part of this important milestone AARO has been working on two new campaigns, the newly launched Dear 535 Campaign, as well as a new initiative to create a non-voting Congressional delegate for overseas Americans.
