DETROIT - June 12, 2023 - PRLog -- Each year, the Women of Color STEM DTX Conference (WOC STEM) gathers esteemed leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from various sectors. This year's conference, held under the theme "Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity," will recognize the accomplishments and groundbreaking innovations of women from diverse backgrounds. WOC STEM announced Mary Hor-Lao, Director of Software Engineering at Abbott Neuromodulation, has been selected as this year's recipient of the prestigious Technologist of the Year Award.

Mary Hor-Lao's journey from surviving the Khmer Rouge's brutal genocide to becoming a prominent figure in the field of electrical engineering is nothing short of extraordinary. Despite facing unimaginable hardships and navigating a male-dominated field, Mary's resilience and determination have propelled her to incredible heights.

As the Director of Engineering in Abbott's Neuromodulation division, she has revolutionized the healthcare industry through her groundbreaking innovations.

Her contributions include leading the development of the world's smallest rechargeable implantable pulse generator, the Eterna™ SCS IPG, and spearheading the creation of the award-winning NeuroSphere™ Virtual Clinic. These breakthrough technologies have positively impacted the lives of patients suffering from chronic pain and movement disorders.

Beyond her engineering achievements, Mary's commitment to diversity and inclusion is commendable. As a mentor and advocate, she empowers aspiring technologists, particularly women of color, to overcome barriers and achieve their full potential.

A defining moment in her career was leading the development of the world's smallest, rechargeable, Class III implantable pulse generator (IPG) at Abbott, which benefited patients with chronic pain and movement disorders. Mary's achievements have earned her the Female Role Model recognition from IEEE Women in Engineering, and she actively engages in STEM mentorship circles and philanthropic efforts to support children in her native Cambodia.

"Receiving the Technologist of the Year Award is an incredibly humbling moment for me," said Hor-Lao. "It serves as a heartfelt recognition of the unwavering determination and passion I've poured into my work and the guidance from mentors, colleagues, and family that helped me along the way."

The Women of Color STEM DTX Conference is set for October 12-14, 2023, in Detroit, Michigan. Now in its 28th year, WOC STEM serves as a platform for individuals and organizations to celebrate excellence in STEM-related fields, foster professional development, and create invaluable networking opportunities.
