Giving Our Children The Gift Of WorkOpportunities For Work Can Provide Wonderful Memories For Our Children
By: Trajan Wealth Kent's father, Stephen Phelps, started his career as an attorney after graduating from law school and passing the bar exam. After three years, he decided to move on from practicing law and opted instead for the life of a business owner. He started a hardware store called Phelps Building Materials that offered ways for his children, and Kent in particular, to earn some extra money doing small jobs around the store. After Stephen liquidated the hardware store, he invested in his passion for music by opening the Stephen E. Phelps Music Studio. This venture offered more opportunities for Kent and his siblings to work by offering piano lessons. This work provided Kent with supplemental income through high school and college. Though the music was a passion for Stephen, unfortunately the studio was closed after 6 years. This brought Stephen back into practicing law and brought him specifically into estate planning. Just like the other businesses, this company was another way for Stephen to bring his children onboard to help with work. Kent remembers these early days of work as a gift from his father, to instill a good work ethic and to spend time together. See the entire post about Kent's father giving his children the gift of work on the Trajan Wealth Blog. These lessons are the types of legacies we want to pass on to our children that mean just as much, if not more, than inheritance and estates ever could.
