BSCP presents FREE master class with GRAMMY-nominated Blues master R.L. Boyce on July 9, 2023Annual Mississippi Railroad event features 2023 NEA National Heritage Fellow with Harrisburg-based band, The Cornlickers
The annual Mississippi Railroad concerts were first established at the recommendation of Harrisburg's The Cornlickers band members Dale Wise and Dave Groninger, who had traveled to record and perform in Clarksdale, MS on numerous occasions, and wanted to bring the spirit of the Delta and its musicians to the Central PA region. Now, almost twenty years later, having hosted artists including Big Jack Johnson (RIP), David "Honeyboy" Edwards (RIP), Jimmy "Duck" Holmes, Anthony "Big A" Sherrod and more, hundreds of local blues fans have developed a deep appreciation of the music from the Mississippi Delta region. This year, in cooperation with the Education Committee of the BSCP, there will be a FREE master class offered to the public prior to the MS RR performance and jam. GRAMMY-nominee R.L. Boyce, who was recently named a National Heritage Fellow by the esteemed National Endowment of the Arts, will lead the class, accompanied by The Cornlickers. Boyce has played North Mississippi Hill Country Blues for more than half a century. The Mississippi Railroad show will begin at 2:00PM, following the Master Class. The show is FREE for members of BSCP and $15 for non-members. Following the show, attendees will have the opportunity to perform with Boyce at an open jam session. ... ... The BSCP invites the public to its free weekly blues jams every Thursday in the back room of Champions Sports Bar and Grill, 300 N. 2nd Street (route 230), Highspire, PA, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The dance floor is always open and the patio with an outdoor bar is available during warmer weather. Each jam night features five sets of local musicians and occasional touring artists. BSCP has a full back line including a newly purchased Roland keyboard and a 50's vintage Hammond RT3 with a Leslie 760. Jammers of all ages and levels are welcomed. In addition to the weekly jams, the BSCP also holds at least five annual events on Sunday afternoons at Champions.
