BALTIMORE - July 11, 2023 - PRLog -- The second annual BEYA Leading Voices Summit, featuring HBCU Vice Presidents of Research, returns on July 28, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. EST. This virtual event will be streamed live on STEM City USA (www.stemcityusa.com) and the BEYA STEM DTX platform (www.beyastemdtx.com), providing a unique immersive experience to explore the groundbreaking work happening at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This year's theme explores HBCU partnerships with tech companies and other institutions in driving innovation and fostering diverse and inclusive research ecosystems.

The second session in the program, "PWI & HBCU Research Partnerships – Creating Meaningful Relationships," will explore the importance of authentic partnerships between Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and HBCUs in advancing national research and STEM participation. The seminar will highlight the economic impact of HBCUs, the significant number of STEM graduates from these institutions, and the key factors that make successful collaborations possible.

A 2023 study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests that predominantly white institutions can improve support for Black students by adopting best practices from HBCUs. HBCUs have a graduation rate of 32% for Black students compared to 44% at other institutions. However, when compared to similar non-HBCUs, Black students at HBCUs are 33% more likely to graduate.

Dr. Wayne Gersie, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion at Michigan Technological University, will moderate the discussion. Dr. Gersie brings a wealth of experience in strategic change management and has a proven track record in driving diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging (DEIS) initiatives.

Joining him is Dr. Isaac Porche, the National Security Analysis mission area executive at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Laboratory. Formerly, he served as deputy director of the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State, where he was responsible for setting a vision and providing oversight to 300+ research scientists, engineers and technicians managing a $100 million sponsor-funded R&D portfolio.
