Follow on Google News | Global Hub for Impact COMMUNITYx, Demands Clemency for Unjust Sentence of Rodney "Hakiem" BuckleyBy: Communityx At age 19, Hakiem was involved in a situation defending himself and a friend during a shoot-out causing serious injury. Despite claiming self-defense, Hakiem's arguments were dismissed, leading to conviction on two counts of felony attempted murder, with firearm and gang enhancements. While the gang enhancements were removed in 2011; Hakiem remains incarcerated due to the lingering firearm enhancement. Since conviction, Hakiem has been dedicated to personal growth, education, and rehabilitation. "Hakiem transformed after receiving a life sentence as a first-time offender. He found hope in belief that those controlling his freedom would notice positive personal changes. I believe that his conduct without a stated release date is undeniable evidence of his character. He went from participating to leading prison mental health programs. He deserves a second chance!" —Carmon Warren, former cellmate and mentor Despite his display of reform and model citizenship, he's been denied clemency, with authorities citing lack of personal growth. While the mandatory minimum time before parole eligibility for second-degree attempted murder is 15 years, Hakiem is currently facing a life sentence with possibility of parole in 2030, which would be 24 years served. "We have hope for clemency. This is not only based upon our belief that Governor Newsom will have compassion for Hakiem's case, but also because of recent resentencing under 1170(d). The law is on Hakiem's side, and we've compiled Hakiem's years of progress. This is evidence that we'll present to the media, which will emphatically negate the board's position that he isn't a changed man." —Chloë Cheyenne COMMUNITYx is rallying for:
