FIFA to pay Al Hilal after Neymar's ACL injury

IKEJA, Nigeria - Oct. 24, 2023 - PRLog -- Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, known as Neymar Júnior or mononymously as Neymar, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal and the Brazil national team. Neymar had to be stretchered off in tears after going down with a knee injury during Brazil's World Cup qualifying clash against Uruguay. Al-Hilal later confirmed that the attacker has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and will have to undergo surgery as he faces a long period on the sidelines. With his latest setback, which threatens to keep him off the field for an extended period, he's now accumulated 16 injuries in the last seven seasons. This has resulted in a total of 640 days sidelined, and this count doesn't include the new recovery period he'll face.

Having the injured Neymar on their books will cost Al-Hilal much more than £6.5 million, however. The player is on a deal that will cost a reported £276 million ($351m) over a two-year spell. Neymar's time in Saudi Arabia has been far from smooth since his arrival in August. He missed the first four Saudi Pro League matches for which he was eligible due to a muscle issue and has featured just five times this season, scoring one goal.

FIFA may end up paying Al-Hilal £6.5million after Neymar suffered a season-ending injury while on international duty with Brazil. Neymar had to be stretchered off during the first half of their 2-0 defeat to Uruguay. Al-Hilal later confirmed that the 30-year-old has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and will have to undergo surgery.

The world football's governing body has an insurance policy, the FIFA Club Protection Programme (CPP), that will pay a player's salary from 28 days to a year with a maximum of £6.5m if they are injured while on international duty. This means the policy will have to hand that maximum figure over to Al-Hilal. An injured Neymar will cost Al-Hilal much more than £6.5million, however. The Brazilian is on a contract that will cost a reported £276million over a two-year spell.
