Follow on Google News | USAC's NEW, SO2 Sand Core Line Goes Live!US Aluminum Castings (USAC) announced this week the implementation of an additional SO2 sand core line into production.
What is a sand core? A sand core is an insert that is placed into a mold pattern to define internal features, cavities, or openings that typically cannot be supported by the mold pattern and in some cases, would not allow the casting to be removed from the pattern. After items are cast, the sand cores are removed and broken apart to reveal the internal features they helped to create. This process reduces the need for many secondary operations in support of USAC's projected casting production. Producing more sand cores enables USAC to stage, prep and produce more castings! How is the sand core made? Sand is coated with resin components and then blown/shot into a vented pattern at high pressure inside what is called a core shooter machine. That pattern is then gassed with sulfur dioxide (SO2) which provides extremely fast cure times with excellent dimensional accuracy at a very consistent, high rate. The fabricated sand core is then cleaned, prepped, and moved to the next stage in the casting process. The newly installed Gaylord Foundry Equipment (www.gfe-usa.com) USAC is excited with this addition to producing even more high precision aluminum castings right here in the USA!
