KW Titans make sports history as Canada's first not-for-profit professional basketball team

KITCHENER, Ontario - Nov. 29, 2023 - PRLog -- Exactly a year after taking control of the city's professional basketball franchise, David and Kate Schooley have achieved a significant milestone by making KW Titans ownership 100 percent not-for-profit. Their vision of complete community ownership within a decade is on track, even though the franchise is not yet profitable. All future profits will be reinvested into local youth sports.

David emphasized, "This is a legacy project for us. We have a unique opportunity to unite our rapidly growing basketball community and make a difference in the lives of youth. Offering the highest caliber of professional basketball play outside the NBA, our coaches and players inspire youth daily, year-round."

The Titans' community involvement centers on their partnership with YMCA of Three Rivers. Co-leading Teen Ball drop-in programs in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph, with plans to expand to Stratford, the Titans also operate the Titans Skills Academy at YMCA locations. This initiative allows youth to hone their skills and train with professional players and coaches, with ongoing discussions to expand these opportunities.

Kate Schooley highlighted the substantial growth in grassroots involvement and expressed gratitude for the positive feedback from fans, families, and the community. "The Titans are more than a sports team; we're a diverse community joined by the heart. Game day at the Aud is an awesome experience, but those intervals are almost a by-product of the larger movement we're trying to create. This is bigger than basketball."

Taking control of the KW Titans just twelve weeks before the start of Season 6, the Schooleys faced challenges but managed to win five of their last eight regular-season games. Now, gearing up for the new Basketball Super League, the Titans are actively signing exciting talent.

The KW Titans' not-for-profit announcement follows their impactful Five-City Food Bank Challenge with the YMCA and aligns with the ongoing release of "Flipping the Titans," a 6-episode docu-series on YouTube. Streaming on Bell Fibe TV1 since March, the series narrates the Titans' return to the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium under the Schooleys' leadership.

Amidst these developments, the official switch to non-profit status on November 24th, 2023, exactly one year from the press conference announcing the Schooleys' takeover, is seen by David and Kate as serendipitous.
