How Voter Suppression Works Today and What We Can Do About It

New approaches to voter suppression are effectively disenfranchising millions of voters of color, young people, and poor people.

RICHMOND, Va. - Dec. 3, 2023 - PRLog -- Join us to learn about how states are making voting more difficult for voters. Importantly, we will also discuss how we can protect our democracy ahead of the 2024 election.

The Center for Common Ground and the Workers Circle will host a virtual panel discussion on December 7 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm ET called "How Voter Suppression Works Today and What We Can Do About It." Guest panelists include Andrea Miller, Founding Board Member and Executive Director of the Center for Common Ground; Evan Milligan, lead plaintiff in Allen v. Milligan and Executive Director of the Alabama Forward; Richard Walker, Founder and Executive Director of Bridging the Gap Virginia and Returning Citizen; Lulu Friesdat, Election Security Journalist & Executive Director of SMART Elections; Carol Blackmon, Black Voters Matter Senior State Organizing Manager, Mississippi.

"This is a unique opportunity for people who are concerned about voter suppression to learn from the people on the frontlines of fighting it," said Ann Toback, CEO of the Workers Circle. "You'll leave this program informed and empowered for concrete, strategic action to step us closer to the fully participatory, multi-racial, multi-cultural democracy that America must become.

The Workers Circle is a national, secular, Jewish social justice organization founded by Eastern European immigrants who came to the United States fleeing autocracy and persecution, and seeking democratic freedoms and economic opportunities at the turn of the 20th century. That history drives our work for an inclusive democracy and human equality today. Our activism is rooted in 1,000 years of Yiddish culture and tradition. Through strategic social justice campaigns, vibrant Yiddish language classes, and interactive educational programs, we power a multi-generational community of activists that is building "a better and more beautiful world for all."

The Center for Common Ground, a non-partisan voting rights organization led by people of color, has been fighting voter suppression and empowering underserved communities since 2018. By helping these communities understand the power of their vote at all levels, the impact of local policies, and where elected officials stand, we aim to help people recognize voter suppression practices and join the battle to end them.
