Elk Burland of Purple Elk Productions Takes Centre Stage as Head of Sound at Birmingham Rep TheatreElk Burland, the founder of Purple Elk Productions has proudly taken the helm as Sound No. 1 at the famous Birmingham Rep Theatre for their seasonal stage adaptation of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe.
By: Purple Elk Productions Taking the lead as the Head of Theatre Sound Production on such a special show and being guided by the vision of world renowned Sound Designer, Tom Marshall is really very special work for Elk. 'Theatre sound production is some of my absolute favourite work, it's a complete honour to be working in such a prestigious theatre, guided by Tom's visionary architecture of sound. Leading the audience on an extraordinary auditory experience that so beautifully enhances the visual and cerebral feast on stage has been some of my most enjoyable work of the entire year which speaks volumes.' This spellbinding version of such a beloved story is delighting children and parents in equal measure, truly bringing the magical nature of Narnia to life. The creative complexity of the show includes a plethora of fight scenes, incredible puppetry, flying characters, and sound effects and lighting that cue up and drive the scenes, leading the audience on a completely immersive sensory journey. Performance sound backdrops increase our emotional engagement and subliminally carry us inside the story and we don't even notice its happening until the end of the show brings us back to earth! As such there is a great deal of responsibility on the head of Elk Burland in his capacity as Sound No. 1 as the sound journey and cues he delivers are so critical to the seamless rhythm of the show but he is thriving in the challenge and loving his time at The Rep. 'The warmth and comradery I've felt from the Birmingham Rep team and the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Company has been on another level with everyone bending over backwards to make me feel like part of the family. Stepping through the wardrobe on a daily basis has been a spectacular and surreal experience, having my tea break sitting next to Mr & Mrs Beaver and other characters and I'm just so happy to play such an integral role in delivering this magical experience and to see the joy and delight on the audience's faces.'
