PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - Jan. 2, 2024 - PRLog -- Many people are reluctant to get treatment for their chronic sleep apnea because they worry about having to wear a mask and use noisy continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) equipment while at rest. But in a recent edition of The Wellness Hour, Dr. George Sepiashvili, from the Advanced Dentistry in Mohegan Lake, NY office, discussed sleep apnea treatment alternatives to CPAP machines.

During the program, Dr. Sepiashvili explained to host Randy Alvarez that new dentistry techniques make it possible for patients with sleep apnea to bypass the need for CPAP altogether. This is especially valuable for the 70-80% of patients who are CPAP intolerant. CPAP intolerance occurs when a patient tries CPAP for a few nights, but cannot or will not continue with the treatment.

Some of the mild to moderate symptoms of sleep apnea include snoring, waking up during the night several times, and experiencing morning headaches, moodiness, and exhaustion. Over time, sleep deprivation and its outcomes begin to build up. This is why sleep apnea patients are at a greater risk of developing additional health problems, like stroke, senility, heart disease, and certain cancers.

Dr. Sepiashvili explains to host Randy Alvares, that new dental techniques and treatments, when applied correctly, can deliver patients lasting relief by addressing the underlying physical issues causing their sleep apnea.

One of the first techniques Dr. Sepiashvili may recommend for a sleep apnea patient is a MicrO2 Device. Sleep apnea can often be traced back to improper jaw and soft oral tissue movement that makes the airway in the back of the throat smaller and smaller. A MicrO2 Device is a custom-fabricated dental appliance that looks like a regular mouthguard. When worn during sleep, the MicrO2 Device keeps the patient's jaw in a neutral position all night, letting them breathe normally and sleep well. Other types of personalized mouthguards can be considered by the patient as well, depending on how much jaw repositioning  they need to get complete relief.

Dr. Sepiashvili notes that using dental appliances, like Micr02 Device, to treat sleep apnea is a "game-changer". Plus, dental appliances require no surgical intervention.
