Dogs really are man's best friend... compared to cats

Six in 10 dog-owners say their pooch is as much of a pal as a human While only half of cat owners see their feline as a true friend

LONDON - Feb. 1, 2024 - PRLog -- Pet owners across the UK value their four-legged friends just as much as their two-legged friends, according to research commissioned by healthy pet food company Burns Pet Nutrition.

The research found that more than half (58%) of Brits say their pet is as much of a companion as a fellow human – with dogs coming out on top.

Six in 10 dog-owners say the bond they have with their prized pooch is just as strong as any human friendship, while just over half (54%) of cat owners said the same.

Most pet owners (92%) feel there has been an increase in people having support pets to help deal with anxiety and depression.

While it may once have been the older generation who sought solace in a pet, the findings reveal it is now 18–24 year olds who are more likely to recognise the mental health benefits of owning a pet, with over half (57%) seeing it as a key benefit of pet ownership.

Laura Crotch Harvey, Nutrition Manager at Burns Pet Nutrition said: 'With regular reports that stress levels are on the rise in all age groups from young children through to teens and adults, and in all areas of our lives, it is reassuring to know that pets are providing invaluable companionship, helping their owners overcome feelings of anxiety and depression.

'In our ever-challenging lives, where mental health is more important than ever, it's good to see the simple act of owning a pet can still make the world of difference.'
