Follow on Google News | "Be Like Carter" Scholarships AwardedThe scholarships are given out twice a year in memory of Carter Stone, an incoming freshman at Agoura High who passed away in 2022 unexpectedly.
Scholarship winners are Carter Roberts, a 12th grader who is on the football and baseball teams and overcame two injuries that required surgeries to continue to compete, Addison Reyes, an 11th grader who excels in track and field and soccer and, in addition, teaches kids to surf and Colin Hook, a 12th grader who plays varsity football for Agoura High and is a certified lifeguard. Scholarship winners are selected based on the character traits they display on and off the field--traits that Carter Stone's family say were a big part of Carter's personality: "The scholarship is in honor of Carter Stone and the legacy he left behind for all of us to remember and strive for," says Clint Cummings, athletic director for Agoura High. "We are so happy and excited for the athletes that have earned the scholarship. Carter Stone's legacy will live on, and recipients of his scholarship will have that memory for a lifetime." The scholarships are funded by California Strong/Southeast Ventura County YMCA and Proactive Sports. California Strong was founded by professional athletes with the YMCA after the 2018 Woolsey Fire to provide support after a natural disaster. Proactive Sports in Westlake Village was founded by NFL coach Ryan Capretta. The training facility focuses on performance, longevity and injury prevention. Each winner receives a $500 scholarship, four months of training at Proactive Sports, a nutrition plan and an in-person mentoring session with California Strong founder and former professional baseball player, Ryan Braun. "Proactive Sports is honored to be a part of keeping Carter Stone's legacy in all our hearts," says Emily Capretta, managing director of Proactive Sports. "Student athletes awarded the scholarship are challenged to be their best and exemplify Carter's work hard, be true, be humble and be kind traits on and off the field or court." Six Agoura High School athletes per year are selected. The deadline for the next round of scholarships is April 27. For more about Be Like Carter, go to https://www.belikecarter.com.
