StormImpact Welcomes Dr. Iliyana Dobreva as Senior Data Scientist

Dr. Dobreva brings a wealth of experience, expertise, and innovation to the StormImpact team, having dedicated over 15 years to groundbreaking research in geospatial technologies and machine learning.

Dr. Dobreva's academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Geography from Texas A&M University in 2019, a master's degree in Geography in 2009, and a bachelor's degree in Geography with minors in Computer Science and Mathematics in 2005 from Concord University, WV.

Before joining StormImpact, Dr. Dobreva held various roles such as Postdoctoral Scholar at the Department of Geography, The Ohio State University, and positions at Texas A&M AgriLife Research, including Assistant Research Scientist and Senior Research Associate. Her extensive background as a Research Associate and Graduate Teaching Assistant at Texas A&M University showcases her commitment to advancing geospatial systems and technologies.

Dr. Dobreva's doctoral research at Texas A&M University involved creating a neural network model for estimating snow cover and developing a GIS-based model in C++ to simulate solar radiation over complex terrains.

As a postdoctoral scholar at The Ohio State University, Dr. Dobreva supported the operational monitoring of soil moisture conditions in the contiguous United States, contributing to the modernization of National Soil Moisture Network and researching machine learning methods for estimating soil moisture in forests. Dr. Dobreva's impactful contributions to the scientific community are reflected in her publications, which can be explored on Google Scholar.

Dr. Dobreva's vast experience and results-driven approach position her as a key contributor to StormImpact's mission. She eagerly anticipates leveraging her expertise in geospatial technologies, machine learning, and scientific innovation to contribute to the development of vegetation risk and storm outage prediction models.
