Unearthing History in Hamilton

Former Graveyard Turned Playground Subject of Search at Symmes Park

HAMILTON, Ohio - March 18, 2024 - PRLog -- At 3pm this Wednesday, March 20th, 2024, Eagle Scout candidate, Zack Kramer, will be looking for bodies. Specifically, the remains of Revolutionary War soldier, Private Paul Bonnel and his wife Mary Bonnel. With the help of the Underground Detective, they will use ground penetrating radar to find the couple that passed over 200 years ago.

Fort Hamilton was founded in 1791 and the Symmes Park property in Hamilton was initially the Hamilton Burying Grounds. Most of the graves were moved to Greenwood Cemetery in 1848, however, the Bonnels' remains were not. As part of Kramer's project, a memorial will be placed at the location of their graves.

The results of the search will be announced at the first annual Hollow Earth Festival, April 13, 12-4pm at Symmes Park in Hamilton. A festival celebrating visionaries such as local hero Lt. John Symmes' who's idea of a hollow earth inspired well-known works of writers, artists, and filmmakers, such as Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth."
