FLANDERS, N.J. - May 29, 2024 - PRLog -- The Amherst Alumni Foundation gives the 2024 Amherst Alumni Apex Award to William Hedgcock Webster for his Extraordinary Career of Public Service as a US Navy Lieutenant, Federal Attorney, Federal Judge, Director of the FBI, Director of the CIA, and Chair of the Homeland Security Advisory Council

The Amherst Alumni Foundation Inc. presented the Amherst Alumni APEX Award to William Hedgcock Webster for his incredible life of Public Service to the United States of America. The Amherst Alumni Apex Award is given to an Amherst Alumna or Alumnus who has reached the Apex of their Life's Work.

William Hedgcock Webster was born on March 6,1924 in St Louis, Missouri and grew up in Webster Groves, Missouri. Bill Webster entered Amherst College in September of 1941 with the class of 1945. His education at Amherst College was interrupted by WWII when he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Lieutenant in the Pacific Theatre of World War II.  William Webster was a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1947 and his Juris Doctor from Washington University in St. Louis in 1949.

After serving in the Navy again, this time in the Korean War, William Webster began his life in Public Service when he was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri in 1960. After President Nixon nominated him for a Judicial Seat in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri he was confirmed by the US Senate on December 17, 1970, and subsequently served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit from July 18,1973 until February 22, 1978.

In 1978 Judge Webster was appointed as the third Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation by President Jimmy Carter until he was sworn in as the Fourteenth Director of the Central Intelligence Agency on May 26, 1987, under Ronald Reagan and George H W Bush until his departure in 1991.  Director Webster concluded his Public Service as the Chair of the Homeland Security Advisory Council from August 2005 until August 2020.  He worked with Ten United States Presidents over a span of sixty years. The Public Service Career of William Hedgcock Webster has certainly reached the Apex.
