BEAVERTON, Ore. - June 11, 2024 - PRLog -- The Apereo Foundation is pleased to announce that it has been chosen by The Software Freedom Conservancy to organize the "FOSS in Education" track at the upcoming FOSSY 2024 conference. This prestigious event will occur August 1st - 4th, 2024, at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon, USA. Apereo will lead the discussions on the significant role of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in educational environments.

The "FOSS in Education" track will highlight the profound impact that educational institutions have in developing and propagating open source software and other open initiatives. Colleges and universities have been at the forefront of adopting and advancing various open educational resources such as open content, textbooks, courses, journals, data, and scientific research.

Educational institutions offer a unique perspective on FOSS usage as enterprise-level adopters in conjunction with government and research bodies, centers of development, and as independent desktop and mobile end-users through their diverse campus constituencies of students, researchers, staff, and faculty. Moreover, higher education institutions are pivotal in nurturing the next generation of developers, often driving their own open source projects and fostering vibrant communities of practice.

The "FOSS in Education" track will feature sessions dedicated to the use, development, and management of open source software and related resources within academic settings. These sessions will cover a broad spectrum of topics, from multi-institutional consortia to individual departmental projects. The track will emphasize common principles, practices, benefits, challenges, and models that span the various open initiatives impacting teaching, learning, and campus administration.

Patrick Masson, Executive Director of the Apereo Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm: "We are honored to be selected by The Software Freedom Conservancy to organize this track. FOSS plays a crucial role in educational environments, and this track will provide an invaluable platform for sharing insights, experiences, and best practices."

The Apereo Foundation invites all interested stakeholders to join us at FOSSY 2024 for a compelling exploration of the intersection between education and open source software.
