The Magical Matchmaker Brings Queer Square Dancing to NYC: Reviving Tradition with a Modern Twist

"Square dancing is a dying dance, and I want to revive it in New York City," says Wade Kyle, the founder of The Magical Matchmaker. "I grew up square dancing, and my grandparents met at a square dance, which wasn't uncommon in the 1930s and 1940s. Although it has a bit of a problematic past, I want the queer community to reclaim it and make it their own. This event is my intention of doing just that."

This initiative also addresses a pressing modern issue: the loneliness epidemic. According to a recent advisory from the Surgeon General, social isolation significantly increases the risk for premature death, comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. By bringing people together through a shared cultural experience, The Magical Matchmaker aims to foster a sense of belonging and combat the loneliness epidemic in the LGBTQ+ community.
