Explore Sourdough History and Baking at Marble Springs Workshop!

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - June 28, 2024 - PRLog -- Marble Springs State Historic Site invites the community to join us on Saturday, July 20th, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm for an engaging and educational sourdough bread-making workshop. This event is part of our ongoing "Beyond Petticoats" series, which highlights the lives and contributions of 18th-century women.

Participants will delve into the history of sourdough breads, explore the evolution of bread baking methods, and learn how to care for and maintain a sourdough starter. Under the expert guidance of Leahanne Clement, attendees will master the art of forming and shaping their own sourdough loaves. The workshop also includes a free recipe for making your own starter and loaves at home, as well as the opportunity to sample freshly baked sourdough breads and homemade butter.

In addition to the hands-on experience, participants will have the chance to purchase Leahanne's sourdough loaves and active starter kits, allowing them to continue their sourdough baking journey at home.

This workshop is the fourth installment in our "Beyond Petticoats" series, which has been celebrating the diverse roles and contributions of women in the 18th century. Previous events in the series have included programs on 18th-century clothing, the uses of the kitchen garden, and the everyday lives of women during the Revolutionary War.

Marble Springs State Historic Site, the last home and farm of Tennessee's first governor, John Sevier, provides a unique and historical setting for this event. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a certified wildlife habitat, Marble Springs offers a rich educational experience that connects visitors to Tennessee's early frontier history.
