LA County's First Art Show Supporting The Mental Health of Filipino-American Youth

15 Filipino-Angeleno young adults are breaking the stigma of mental health in their community through the power of comic book art

LOS ANGELES - July 9, 2024 - PRLog -- For Filipino-American youth, cultural and societal pressures can have a major impact on mental health. But help-seeking rates are much lower than rates found in general US populations, and they are also low compared to other minority Asian groups. Studies show higher rates of depression among Filipino-American adolescents compared to their peers due to a cultural stigma around mental health, strict family expectations, and experiences of discrimination.

That's why The Human Beauty Movement along with the LA County Department of Mental Health Asian Pacific Islander (API) Underserved Cultural Communities (UsCC) subcommittee has put together a unique creative wellness program specifically for Fil-Am youth ages 16-24. Under the auspices of the Mental Health Services Act, the program involved in-person workshops covering mental health education, mindfulness practices, art therapy, and the creation of comic book artwork.

"The Filipino community is incredibly caring and vital to the fabric of Los Angeles," states Jennifer Norman, founder of The Human Beauty Movement. "It's exciting to support Fil-Am youth as they break the intergenerational stigma of mental health, embrace their beautiful culture, and discover new creative outlets for healthy self-expression."

A celebratory public exhibit of the Fil-Am youth artwork will take place on Thursday, July 11th, 2024, between 6-8 pm at ArtShare L.A in the DTLA Art's District. Free tickets can be reserved on EventBrite:
