Empowering Health Through Access to Organic Produce

JAMAICA, N.Y. - July 31, 2024 - PRLog -- The Southeast Queens Chamber of Commerce together with partners Ahsak Skincare and Mother Earth Juice Bar and Health Foods Cafe are hosting a farm stand and market dedicated to providing a diverse array of organic produce, including kale, sweet corn, farm-fresh eggs, and beets. "We believe that access to wholesome, nutritious food is a right, not a privilege, and strive to make healthy choices more accessible to everyone", said Dr Lord. Nestled in a region where fast-food chains like McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and various fried chicken spots dominate, our market stands as a beacon of nutritional wellness.

African Americans face higher risks for a range of health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. This disparity is highlighted by the Office of Minority Health, part of the Department of Health and Human Services. Addressing these health inequities requires targeted efforts to improve access to nutritious food, quality healthcare, and preventive care.

Access to nutrient-poor, inexpensive, shelf-stable items from dollar and liquor stores is prevalent. These environments often contribute to poor dietary habits and exacerbate health disparities. Addressing these issues involves increasing the availability of healthy food options and supporting community-driven initiatives to improve food access and overall health outcomes.

African Americans are disproportionately affected by early-onset health conditions compared to their white counterparts, leading to higher early mortality rates. High blood pressure affects 12% of African Americans aged 18-34, compared to 10% of their white peers. This disparity increases with age, affecting 33% of African Americans and 22% of whites aged 35-49 and Diabetes is prevalent in 10% of African Americans aged 35-49, while only 6% of whites in the same age group experience this condition.

"We hope to inspire a shift toward healthier eating habits in our community," said Dr Lord. "Join us every Friday to explore our selection and discover how easy and delicious healthy eating can be". The farm stand is located on front of Mother Earth Juice Bar Cafe and Health Foods 115-42 Sutphin Blvd, Jamaica NY 11434 (https://www.google.com/maps/search/115-42+Sutphin+Blvd,+J...). Runs until the end of August. Time 10-6 Together, we can foster a healthier, happier community.
