MIDLAND, Texas - Aug. 16, 2024 - PRLog -- Emily Statton Smith has officially filed to run for the Midland ISD School Board, District 4. A Midland native and attorney, Smith brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to the community.

"I'm running for the Midland ISD School Board because I believe in fostering a stronger partnership between the district and the community," said Smith. "Our schools serve over 25,000 students, and the future of Midland is closely tied to the success of MISD. I want to work toward better communication and collaboration that benefits both our students and our educators."

Smith plans to address the lack of mental health resources and timely evaluations for children with disabilities, ensure accountability for school bond projects, and support early literacy programs. "With our recent bond approval, I want to hold our contractors and architects accountable for budgets and timelines while keeping the community informed," she noted.

With a legal career that includes managing multimillion-dollar budgets, Smith understands the importance of being detail-minded and wise with taxpayer funds. "My experience as an attorney has taught me the value of careful planning and financial stewardship. I'm committed to applying those skills to ensure MISD makes the best use of its resources for the benefit of our students," she said.

"My motivation is deeply personal," Smith added. "I have two daughters, Sylvie and Sabrina, who will be members of the MHS Class of 2035. I want to ensure they, and all Midland students, receive the best education possible."

Smith has been actively involved in the community through roles on the Midland Education Foundation Board, and Habitat for Humanity Board, among others. She and her family attend Redeemer Church.

Smith is a graduate of Midland High School, Class of 2000. She attended Texas A&M University on a full scholarship as a National Merit Scholar and was a Merit Award Winner and a recipient of the Director's Excellence Award. She earned her law degree from Baylor Law School, where she was awarded a full tuition Dean's Scholarship.
