Memory Center Launches Rapid Access to Alzheimer's TreatmentMemory Centers of America offers rapid evaluation and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
By: Memory Centers of America Progression of the mild stage can occur in as little as two years. Over the past 12 months, the FDA has approved two disease-modifying treatments that delay the progression of mild Alzheimer's. Several more drugs are in the pipeline, but their promise resides primarily in the mild stages. Even if early dementia is suspected by a patient, their family, or a treating provider, the wait time to see a memory specialist in many communities often exceeds a year. By that time, the treatment window has lapsed. Based in Aventura, Florida, MEMORY CENTERS of AMERICA, offers an integrated one-stop clinic for rapid evaluation and treatment of Alzheimer's. A location in Jupiter, FL will be opening on November 1, 2024. Its medical director, Dr. Jeff Gelblum, is one of the country's leading neurologists in the management of Alzheimer's disease, with over 25 years of experience in dementia care. He laments that, "Alzheimer's care is typically delayed and disorganized. Many communities lack the neurological expertise and ancillary services to rapidly diagnose and treat. This is particularly distressing given the recent FDA approval of Leqembi® and Kisunla™, two IV drugs which significantly delay mild Alzheimer's progression" Memory Centers of America will eliminate the logistical barriers to Alzheimer's care. Patients can be referred from throughout Florida, across the country, or anywhere in the world. They undergo the entire work-up and treatment at the memory center in just a few days. An adjacent Hilton hotel by our Aventura office offers discounted rates for out-of-town visitors. Dr. Gelblum boasts that "in addition to decades of expertise, our team has instant access to blood tests, brain MRIs, and PET scanners which are requisite elements for precise diagnosis. Test results are quickly delivered into the patient's digital record so that our infusion nurses can initiate treatment within just a few days." Added offerings include diet, lifestyle, caregiver support, and home-based programs. The good news is that most health insurances — including Medicare — cover the diagnostic tests and drugs. For patients traveling from out of town, infusion medication can be dispensed and cold-packed for transport back to their hometown for local infusion. The patients are followed remotely via Telemedicine. Care is coordinated with their local providers. Patients are flocking to this new model of rapid dementia care. Notes one couple who flew in from Baltimore, "at home, we were given a six-month wait for just an appointment. And then who knows how long before my husband would get treated, if at all? We flew to Florida, received the workup, and got our first infusion all in just a matter of days. The follow-up infusions are now performed here in Maryland." Dr. Gelblum concludes that "rapid response and integrated care will beat back the Alzheimer tsunami. Memory Centers of America is the nation's frontline defense." He looks forward to opening these centers in other areas to expand access to quick evaluation and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
