West Hills, CA — Kadima Day School, along with our local community partners, will be hosting a memorial event this evening, commemorating a year since the horrific attack in Israel and the aftermath of surging anti-semitism worldwide. This event is dedicated to honoring those who were tragically murdered, those who are still being held in captivity as hostages, and all those who died fighting to secure the Jewish state. "The year since last October 7 has been a time of great pain for our community: mourning the victims of the massacre, remembering the hostages still held in subhuman conditions, praying for the Israeli soldiers forced to fight a war they never asked for and hoped never to be called upon to fight, and supporting American Jews, most prominently college students, exposed to the most hateful wave of antisemitism in generations. But it has also been a time of great solidarity, of return to first principles, of rededication and renewal. This evening's ceremony is an encapsulation of both sentiments, and our hope is that it brought some balance to the sometimes disorienting alternation between them." said Dr. Steven Lorch, Head of School of Kadima Day School in WestHills, CA. The event will include speeches from dignitaries, community leaders, and survivors, as well as songs and prayers of remembrance, fostering a spirit of unity, resilience, and hope within our community. "We Israelis living outside of Israel felt the ground pulled out from under our feet on October 7, 2023." said Karin Koskas, Director of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at Kadima Day School. "Some of us flew back for reserve duty, to volunteer, or just to be part of the response in Israel. Many others mobilized locally to help collect resources, equipment, and financial support for soldiers and needy families, bring public attention to the plight of the hostages, and to work on behalf of our community, our home, our State of Israel. This year of unending challenges has taught us how important it is to stay united, how much strength we have when we work together."
