Wines of the Langhe (Fine Italian Wines)

EAST SETAUKET, N.Y. - Oct. 15, 2024 - PRLog -- The Langhe district located in the southern portion of northwest Italy's Piemonte region is renowned for its high quality wines. The rolling landscape that makes up the foothills of the alps in this part of Italy is a diverse blend of different soil types at various elevations with a continental climate (hot summers, cold winters) which play a huge role in the ability of this part of Italy to grow phenomenal grapes for wine production. Home to the "King" and "Queen" of Italian wines in Barolo and Barbaresco respectively, the region focuses on the red varietals Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. We feature the delicious and accessible Langhe Nebbiolos of two producers we support in particular: Schiavenza and Pecchenino.

A relative new comer in the Langhe, Pecchenino was founded in the 1950's by Attilio Pecchenino who owned and cultivated 8 hectares (a little less than 20 acres) in the Langhe, mostly around the town of Dogliani. Through the generational succession, Attilio's grandchildren Orlando and Attilio have expanded the family's holding to around 35 hectares expanding into Monforte d'Alba and Bossolasco. They produce several single cru Barolos as well as a fantastic Langhe Nebbiolo. Their 'Botti' Nebbiolo is a stunner for the price! Made from grapes grown on vines in the vineyard 'Vignabotti' that are an avaerage age of 25 years old, the must (unfermented grape juice) spends about 28 days together macerating with the skins during the fermentation. The wine is then racked into 25 hectoliter (around 650 gallon) oak botti, or barrels, where it spends a full year before bottling. The resulting wine is imbued with a delightful scent of blueberries, raspeberries and violets and  robust, but restrained tannins on the palate. More robust in its youth, the wine will transform into a more elegant rendition with a few years of cellaring.

Schiavenza is located in Serralunga d'Alba in the heart of Piedmont's Langhe district, celebrated for its great Barolo vineyards. The estate was founded in 1956 by the brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria; the estate and surrounding area were formerly part of the Opera Pia Barolo (a castle that is kind of like the Hospices du Beaune: part educational institution and part hospital) whose vineyards were traditionally worked by sharecroppers. The local dialect for sharecropping is schiavenza. Today, the estate is run by the second-generation Alessandria sisters, Enrica and Maura, and their husbands Luciano Pira and Walter Anselma. Their holdings include 8.95 hectares in Serralunga with a small 0.5ha plot in Monforte d'Alba, and include the heralded crus Prapò, Cerretta, and Broglio. Their Langhe Nebbiolo is from a 0.6-hectare parcel in Monforte, planted in 1998 with western exposure at 390m above sea level ...
